A TORY tax row erupted last night after PM Rishi Sunak rejected calls to slash tax rates before the next general election.
He tried to appease his MPs by saying his plan to prioritise reducing inflation was a "deeply Conservative" approach rooted in the days of Margaret Thatcher.
Mr Sunak issued his desperate plea shortly after Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove said he would like to see the tax burden reduced before the next election", which is due next year.
The row blew up as the Tories kicked off their annual party conference in Manchester. Mr Gove suggested the focus should be on cutting taxes on work such as income tax or national insurance.
A group of 33 rebel Tory MPs have said they will not support next month's Autumn Statement if it contains tax rises.
Under-fire Mr Sunak said: "When it comes to taxes, I'm a Conservative.
"Of course I want to cut taxes, the best tax cuts that I can deliver for the British people right now is to halve inflation."
