ARTIFICIAL Intelligence is better at spotting prostate cancer than hospital doctors. The tech has been taught to diagnose the disease using more than 10,000 medical scans. And using AI, the number of “false positives” – where patients were wrongly diagnosed – was halved when compared with human experts. An international team based in The Netherlands is behind the tech. They pitted it against 62 human radiologists drawn from 20 countries. And they reckon AI could now help to reduce overdiagnosis and prevent unnecessary surgery for what is the most common cancer among men. The researchers hope in the long run the new technique “could potentially support the diagnostic pathway of prostate cancer management”. A paper published in The Lancet Oncology said AI was also found to be just as effective as radiologists at picking up severe cancers, based on checks carried out to see how patients fared six years after diagnosis.
