Experts warn it poses a huge risk. Rural insurers fear stolen shoulder and leg joints will be kept in filthy conditions before entering the food chain, without safety checks.
One recent raid saw a brazen gang herd 11 sheep into a truck from a field in Hutton Mulgrave, Whitby, North Yorks.
PC Jack Donaldson, of North Yorks Police's rural task force, said "Farmers often raise their stock from the day they are born, and for them to disappear overnight into criminal hands causes great anxiety and stress, as animals are often mistreated by the criminals."
Insurer NFU Mutual is now asking farmers to take steps to better protect their sheep.
