FRENCH tea growers are targeting the British market and reckon they can produce a perfect cuppa for us. The country’s farmers are increasingly deciding to grow tea plants as they say they’ve cracked how to enhance the experience for Brits. They have created plantations in southern areas and even in Brittany in the country’s north-west. Producers claim their brews aren’t as strong as English breakfast or Assam, and are “softer and more suitable” for afternoon teas. Jean-Marc Sanchez, who grows French tea at Les Plantations d’Acapella, near Perpignan, southern France, said: “Tea plants like warmth but not too much direct sun and we’re only 3km from the Mediterranean. “I would definitely be interested in supplying tea to the UK, with its historic love of tea.” He expects to produce up to 300kg this year, after harvesting 50kg in 2023. Arnaud Dhenin, a grower in Brittany, said: “Our humid climate and acidic soils are ideal.”
