THE 20% energy bills rise in April could be axed after a minister said he is "sympathetic" to such a move.
Energy Secretary Grant Shapps said he is "working very hard" with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to avoid typical energy bills rising from &pound;2,500 a year to &pound;3,000.
Mr Shapps said: "I completely recognise the argument over keeping that price guarantee in place, and the Chancellor and I are working very hard on it. I'm by very sympathetic to making sure that we protect (people).
"We're looking at this very, very carefully." Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised "extra support for the most vulnerable" as experts warned one in five would struggle to pay bills if the rise is imposed.
