Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman, inset, brought the town unwelcome fame with his poem Slough, which reads: "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now."

The first recorded mention of the town was in 1195, when it was called "Slo"

In 1918, a patch of land to the west of the town was developed as a repair depot for army vehicles. It became home to 850 new factories just before World War Two.

The area is now Slough Trading Estate, the biggest single-ownership business park in Europe.

The Mars bar was born in Slough in 1932, when US confectioner Frank Mars gave son Forrest the cash to set up a UK business. His firm - still based in the town - also gave us the Twix, Maltesers, Topic and Starburst.
