MAX VERSTAPPEN took pole position for tomorrow's Qatar Grand Prix as the indomitable Dutchman closes in on his third world title.

Verstappen will again be crowned champion if he finishes at least sixth in today's 19-lap sprint race at Lusail International Circuit.

The Red Bull driver started his quest to become the 11th driver to win the title more than twice in typically irresistible fashion as he clocked the fastest time in qualifying.

The starting order for the sprint will be determined by a second qualifying session this afternoon.
