And they predict days may last 25 hours – but it will take about 200million years for it to happen. Prof Stephen Meyers, of the US University of Wisconsin-Madison, said: “As the Moon moves away, the Earth is like a spinning figure skater who slows down as they stretch their arms out.” Research found the Moon moves 1.5in further away every year due to a process called lunar recession. The drift was discovered thanks to Apollo astronauts in the 60s and 70s. They put reflectors on the Moon so scientists on Earth could fire lasers toward it and measure how fast it is retreating.
