SPACE boffins are in a black hole of bullying and harassment, they claim.
The Royal Astronomical Society says staff concerns raised in a report urgently need addressing.
Of 661 staff affiliated with astronomy and geophysics, 44% reported problems at work in the past two years.
Of those, 65% said their complaints were either "ignored" or&nbsp;unsatisfactorily handled". Some worked for the European Space Agency and for Nasa.
Former society president Emma Bunch said: "The results are bleak. They form a powerful case for change." The survey was conducted in 2020 but the results have taken four years to deliver. Women&nbsp;and non-binary people in the field were 50% more likely than men to be harassed or bullied.
And 12% of bisexual astronomers reported being bullied at least once a week.
Around 5% of LGBTQ staff were bullied in the 24 months preceding the survey.
Society president Mike&nbsp;Lockwood said: "The evidence is a wake-up call to everyone in astronomy and geophysics.
"The first step to solving any problem is to admit that there is one and to gather evidence.
"Now we have done that it is clear the issue is both insidious and systemic."&nbsp;
