Amazing mice found on Andes desert volcano could live in thin air of Mars

MICE could potentially live on Mars, boffins reckon.

Eggheads found the mammals living in the extremely harsh Mars-like environment at the summit of volcanoes in the Andes.

The peaks in the Atacama desert plateau of Chile and Argentina, are the "closest thing on Earth" to Mars' environment due to the thin, super-dry atmosphere and freezing temperatures.

In 2020, Prof Jay Storz and climber Mario Perez Mamani, inset, found a live mouse atop the 22,000ft peak of Llullaillaco.

They have since found 13 more.
