The UK Tea And Infusions Association rubbished the findings, saying a classic brew trounces coffee.
And it insists hot beverage lovers are sipping more cups of tea both in Britain and around the world.
Dr Sharon Hall, the association's boss, said: "Brits are drinking over 100million cups of tea each day versus 98million cups of coffee that's at least two million more cups of tea each day versus coffee.
"And across the globe we drink over five billion cups of tea each day - way more than the two billion cups of coffee drunk daily.
"As a result, tea remains the most consumed beverage in the world and a national treasure even amongst younger adults who love to experiment with different beverages."
