A WARSHIP that sank in the Thames during 1944 could explode at any moment, surveyors have warned.
The SS Richard Montgomery - an American vessel carrying munitions for the allies in the Second World War - has been resting in the estuary at a depth of 49ft with 1,400 tonnes of explosives in the hold.
But her three masts, which are visible above the water, are in a poor&nbsp;state and could collapse, triggering an explosion and a huge tidal wave.
Southend councillor Lydia Hyde suggested the blast could reach her town - more than five miles from the "doomsday wreck".
She said: "It's just tipped through that threshold now where the safe thing to do is remove the masts."
A Department for Transport spokesman said: "We commissioned experts to carry out vital surveying work to the wreckage.
"Based on their findings, we are now reviewing and updating our plans to remove the ship's masts as soon and as safely as possible."
Estimates have put the possible tidal wave at 16ft high, while some experts say it would be just a ripple.
Work on dismantling the wreck's masts is due to begin in March.
