RORY McILROY insists nobody will run away with victory in the style of Martin Kaymer after struggling at Pinehurst yesterday.

Having posted his first bogey-free opening round at a Major since his 2014 Open Championship victory, McIlroy got to work yesterday morning as the co-leader of the US Open alongside Ryder Cup nemesis Patrick Cantlay.

But the Northern Irishman suffered a rude awakening in the blistering North Carolina heat en route to a two-over 72.

Back in 2014, the last time the US Open was contested at Pinehurst No. 2, Kaymer surged to an eight-shot win.
