SOARING food prices hiked the cost of living more than expected last month.
Inflation fell to 10.1% from 10.4% in February but many experts had expected it to dip below 10%.
Food prices have jumped 19.2% since last February, the biggest increase since August 1977, the Office for National Statistics said.
Items hit with the highest increases last month include olive oil, up by 49%, milk (38%) and ready meals (21%).
Industry figures warn we should not look to "huge" price drops any time soon. Simon Mellin, of milk deliverers The Modern Milkman said: "I wouldn't expect huge reductions in the next 12 months." The ONS figures are a big blow to PM Rishi Sunak's pledge to cut inflation by half by the end of the year.
Analysts now believe interest rates will be hiked further by the Bank of England next month. It has been raising them to try to curb inflation, with the main rate now at 4.25%.
