<p>The comic said it was changed because the characters are &ldquo;all from Wimbledon Common&rdquo;.</p>
<p>The popular kids&rsquo; books about the burrowing creatures have been adapted for radio to mark 50 years since the show launched on BBC One.</p>
<p>Comic Johnny said: &ldquo;They were all essentially born in Wimbledon and they were all more or less of that region.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Why set her apart with a French accent just because she had a French name?&rdquo;</p>
<p>Madame Cholet is the chef of the burrow on Wimbledon Common, where the Wombles help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish.</p>
<p>Vegas, 53, added: &ldquo;Everybody has a fondness of it and I didn&rsquo;t realise quite how ahead of its time it was, the message that was contained within the storytelling &ndash; it was tidying and it was&nbsp;recycling. It&rsquo;s a wonderfully engaging story.&rdquo;</p>
