STINGY rich people are giving less of their cash to charity even as their own bank balances bulge.
The wealthiest 10% of Brits now hand over half as much as a proportion of their income as the poorest 10%, eye-opening research shows.
Donations from the uber-wealthy have plummeted 20% in real terms since 2017, and charities are now &pound;3.4billion worse off than if fat cats had kept pace.
Think tank Onward published the study as a group of charity donors called on tycoons to do better.
They urged a return to the philanthropy that helped to "build Britain" in the 19th Century.
Steve Morgan, founder of housebuilder Redrow, has given over &pound;300million to charity. He reckons the rich must not assume the Government will step up.
He said: "A sense of shared obligation has faded. Now is the moment to revitalise philanthropy." Shivani Onward, Menon, from said the rich should hold up "their end of the charitable bargain that expects those with the most to give generously to the least".
