THERE are now more giant redwoods in the UK than in their native California.
The world's largest trees are flourishing after they were first brought across the Atlantic 160 years ago, a study years ago, a study has revealed.
An estimated 500,000 of them are growing in the UK, compared to just 80,000 back home in California.
Study author Dr Phil Wilkes, from Kew's botanic garden at Wakehurst, Sussex, said: "Half a million trees is quite a lot to go under the radar until now, but it's when you start looking for them in the landscape and compiling these data sets that you realise how many there are."&nbsp;
UK redwoods are yet to reach the heights of their counterparts, with the tallest British tree standing at just 180ft, compared to more than 295ft in the US.
This is because the ones here are still quite young. The redwoods were first brought to Britain by the Victorians to be planted in grand estates of the rich.
Boffins found the redwoods are growing about as fast as in their native home in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada.
The UK climate seems to suit them, said Dr Wilkes who went on: "Where they grow in California it's cooler and moister than you would envisage.
"We have a similar climate here - it's very wet and they need the moisture to grow."
