LEAKING sewers are going unchecked by two water firms as they have no idea where they are.
More than 30% of Thames Water's network is unmapped and as much as 40% across Southern Water.
It has sparked fresh outrage from campaigners who have hit out against the mass sewage dumping and spills by big water companies.
Both firms have been slapped with big fines for pollution offences in recent years.
Inadequate maintenance and investment in the sewage infrastructure has been blamed as one of the main causes. Ash Smith, inset, of the Windrush Against Sewage Pollution campaign, said: "If they don't know where the sewers are, they will also be ignorant of the age and condition of the pipes."
Southern said it was working "to design an accurate and effective sewer mapping" system with other water companies, including Thames which said the collaboration was designed to "co-ordinate an industry-wide standard".
Both have also asked the regulator Ofwat to approve increases in customer bills to fund repairs.
