THAMES Water has paid out nearly £160million in dividends despite warning it could run out of money by May next year.The UK's largest water company said debts had risen to £15.2billion in the past year.The firm said it was still looking for fresh funding after investors pulled the plug on £500m of emergency cash earlier this year.But it paid two fresh dividends worth £158.3m in March.They were to help fund two of its holding companies, Kemble Eurobond and Thames Water Ltd, both of which are in financial trouble. Water firms with poor financial and environmental records are not allowed to pay dividends.Thames has faced widespread criticism for levels of sewage dumped into waterways.According to reports, a blueprint was being drawn up in the spring which could see the firm effectively nationalised. Green MP Sian Berry said it was "a perfect example of the failed experiment of water privatisation".But chief executive Chris Weston claimed it was "not in the interests" of customers for it to fall into Government hands.
