BRITAIN faces a leap-day lashing as an extra day's rain is set to make February the wettest for at least 258 years.
Forecasters predict seven days of washouts ahead with another inch to two inches' of rain due for many.
However Thursday could be the wettest day to squeeze even more rain into this sodden month.
The Environment Agency issued 227 flood alerts, with the South and Midlands set to be worst-hit in coming days.
The month is verging on the wettest February since records began in 1766, with 129mm of rain, two-and-a-half times the 48mm average, Met Office figures show.
And Central England needs just 5mm more rain by Thursday to break its overall February record.
Channel 4 weatherman Liam Dutton said: "Some places have seen three times the average rainfall so far this February."
