WINE lovers have dinosaurs to thank as the beasts' extinction allowed grapes to spread globally.Nine new species of fossil grapes have been discovered in South America, including the oldest ones ever found in the Western Hemisphere.The encapsulated seeds in Colombia, Panama and Peru are up to 60million years old. Boffins say the fossils show how grapes spread in the years following the death of the dinosaurs.Dr at Fabiany Herrera, Chicago's Field Museum, said: "This discovery shows that after the extinction of the dinosaurs, grapes really started to spread across the world." Dr Monica Carvalho, at the University of Michigan, added: "Large animals, such as dinosaurs, are known to alter their surrounding ecosystems."We think that large dinosaurs roaming through the forest were likely knocking down trees, effectively maintaining forests more open than they are today."In denser forests after their demise, climbing vines such as grapes would have done well.
