BONKERS Britain recorded its hottest January day of 19.6C - a week after being colder than the Arctic.
Record temperatures were triggered by a 700-mile wide African heat plume.
The 19.6C temperature was recorded at Kinlochewe, in the Highlands, inset, beating the previous record of 18.3C set in Aberdeenshire in 2003.
Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said southern winds dragged milder air from Africa across the UK.
And the balmy weather will continue today with temperatures as high as 16C. Just over a week ago, freezing temperatures as low as -14C saw snow sweep the north.
BLOOD rain will shock Brits as a Saharan dust plume blows in - 2,000 miles from Africa.
The dust is set to fall to earth in showers from today following recent storms. It is known as blood rain due to the dust's reddish stain on cars and windows.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "You might want to hold off washing the car just yet. And watch out for some colourful sunrises and sunsets."
