RICKY Tomlinson has revealed when he was first invited to an acting workshop, he mistakenly turned up in a van with his tools and a concrete mixer.
The star, famed for playing dad Jim in The Royle Family, trained as a plasterer before becoming an actor.
Asked about the start of his TV career, he said Roland Joff&eacute; - who went on to direct The Killing Fields - auditioned him for a role in 1981.
Ricky, 84, said: "I wrote to London Weekend Television to audition for a film.
"I did the audition, saw a fella called Roland Joff&eacute; and fell out with him. Told him to stick his job up his arse.
"Later his office called saying, 'He wants you for a workshop. I said 'OK' but thought he meant build a bloody workshop.
"I phoned a mate who had a van with a mixer, bit of sand and all that, and we went to do this workshop.
"When we got there, there was the cast of the movie Letter To Brezhnev and 100 other people.
"I said, 'What are you all doing here?" They said, 'We're here for the workshop."
