The new proposal suggests taxing fabrics priced up to ₹1,500 at 5%, fabrics between ₹1,500 and ₹10,000 at 18%, and those above ₹10,000 at 28%.The leaders argued that the proposed rates would treat fabrics—a basic necessity—as a luxury. "Most hand-knitted sweaters would now attract 18% GST and wedding fabrics costing over ₹10,000 would be taxed at 28%. Does this mean weddings are now considered a luxury?" questioned Sunil Mehra. The leaders warned that higher rates would encourage tax evasion rather than increase revenue. "Instead of burdening a small segment of the population, the government should focus on widening the tax base," said Aggarwal. They estimated that businesses have suffered losses of ₹5 lakh crore over the last 2.5 years, with additional costs of ₹300 crore weekly due to diverted transport routes. HTC
