LILIES are one of the garden's most seductive flowers. No romantic Edwardian border would have been complete without their tall spikes, elegant trumpet shapes and heady perfumes.
They remained a favourite with gardeners for many years.
When I was a lad, clumps of stately white Madonnas or classic regales were still considered essentials.
Over time they lost ground as fashions changed, but in recent years they've come back into vogue again. Now they're popping up in all the coolest gardens, sprinkled among perennials or in containers on the patio. And their effect is tremendous.
Picture the scene: a summer evening after work, you and your other half are sunk in soft garden seats in a sunny corner with a glass of something chilled and white, surrounded by what must be the world's most glamorous flowers.
