Santner, Latham put NZ in front

Mitchell Santner's seven-wicket haul and Tom Latham's 86 helped New Zealand take a firm grip in the second Test against India with a lead of 301 runs on the second day at the MCA Stadium, here on Friday.

At stumps, New Zealand had reached 198/5 in 53 overs with Tom Blundell batting on 30 and Glen Phillips on nine.

Latham had helped the Kiwis' cause with his 86 while Santner scalped 7/53 to give them a huge impetus.

Earlier, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal started cautiously with the former being more proactive. The duo added 49 runs for the second wicket before Gill perished to Mitchell Santner leg before wicket.

The New Zealand left arm spinner was relentless with his accuracy bowling in unplayable areas to frustrate batters and kept troubling Gill, who was going well until 30, before finally scalping him to put India in a spot of bother.
