A LEADING transport expert has said it will be "economic suicide" if Plymouth gives up on its airport. Andy Byford, a former head of transport in London and New York, said there is a clear link between a city's economic viability and the quality of its transport connections.
Mr Byford said: "If a 35-year career in transport has taught me anything, it is the demonstrable link between a city's economic viability and competitive advantage and the quality of its transport connections.
"In the US, cities and communities much smaller than Plymouth have their own thriving regional airports and this becomes especially important for a geographically peripheral city like Plymouth, located deep into a peninsula and with no access to the motorway system or high-speed rail."
Mr Byford is a non-executive director of FlyPlymouth, the company set up with an aim of reopening the airport.
