IN June 1937, Major George Sydney Strode Strode was the chairman of Plympton Grammar School. The celebrated school, which had been founded in the late 17th century, had struggled somewhat during the course of the 19th century, as we learned from the programme marking the opening of new premises.
"Since then [then being circa 1786, when its most distinguished old boy, Sir Joshua Reynolds, had been Mayor of Plympton] the School has experienced many vicissitudes of fortune. For example, in 1820 there were only nine scholars: in 1876 the old classical curriculum was replaced by one with a definite 'commercial' bias, and in a freeschool foundation the 'free' element was crowded out.
