IT'S the coolest place on the planet right now. A white Christmas is guaranteed and the post-lunch walk is something else.

Andrew Johnson is enjoying a festive season like no other - in Antarctica.

The 57-year-old Liverpudlian works as a radio operator with scientists from the British Antarctic Survey at the Rothera Research Station.

He is one of 150 people at the base which gets food deliveries every three months in winter. The next ship is expected in a few days.

"My hope is for cranberry sauce," he laughs. "There's no nipping down the shops for a last-minute present." Christmas here means many of the usual festive trappings but with crucial differences.
