<p id="1"><strong>New Delhi: </strong>The Australian Parliament on Tuesday ratified the trade deal with India, paving the way for implementation of the first phase of the treaty, which will see Canberra remove import duty on all products and offer a more liberal visa regime in return for India cutting tariffs on a several items.</p>
<p id="2">The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IndAus ECTA), which was signed in April, needed to be cleared by the Australian Parliament, and is expected to be operationalised over the next couple of months after the procedural formalities are completed. Separately, negotiations for a comprehensive treaty are expected to commence in January, the commerce department said in a presentation.</p>

<p id="3">In recent years, India has stepped up its FTA engagement with the UK, Canada and the EU with negotiations for an agreement with Gulf countries to be launched this week. This was the third such agreement, after the Mauritius and UAE trade pacts.</p>
