<p><strong>Hyderabad:&nbsp;</strong>Frequent incidence of physical and sexual harassment, jeering, stalking and verbal abuse have come to haunt students of the Tata Institute of Social Science&rsquo;s (Hyderabad campus) in Turkayamjal &mdash; roughly 60 km from core city limits.</p>

<p id="2">While the environment within the college campus is safe, students &mdash; mostly women &mdash; say they dread commuting to the institute or stepping out for leisure because of relentless harassment at the hands of local rowdies. Such is the extent of trauma that last month one student was forced to approach the police for help. This was after she was &lsquo;attacked&rsquo; while on her way to TISS.</p>
<p id="3">&ldquo;During morning hours, a drunk man on a bike tried to grab her. When other students intervened he sped away,&rdquo; said a student adding, &ldquo;Such incidents especially occur on the Brahmannapalli road that connects the campus to the highway. Through the day, rowdies ride through this stretch harassing students, passing lewd remarks and indecent gestures. In the evening it is worse because the road has no streetlights. It is extremely unsafe for women post 5pm.&rdquo;</p>
<p id="4">Comprising 400 students, TISS-Hyderabad has been operating out of this area since 2019. It does not have any on-campus accommodation. Though the police, post the complaint, has started 12-hour patrolling around the campus &mdash; 9am to 9pm &mdash; students say there are still not confident about venturing out alone.</p>

<p id="2">&ldquo;In less than six months of joining I faced stalking twice. The stalker found out our names (my room-mate&rsquo;s and mine), where we lived and started tracking our movements daily. He sent us similar messages on Instagram which terrified us. One of my friends confronted the man after which he blocked us. But even then, the fear remains that he may still be around physically and target other students,&rdquo; said another female student ruing how the problem is rooted in the campus being non-residential.</p>

<p id="2">&ldquo;Though the institute had informed us about it, we did not anticipate it to be so far from the city. Apart from one private hostel near campus, majority tend to stay in Turkayamjal, Hastinapur, LB Nagar or Manneguda in hostels and shared apartments,&rdquo; said another student pursuing her Masters.</p>
