Sharm el-Sheikh: India on Monday submitted its long-term low emission development strategy (LT-LEDS) to the UN climate body, laying out the roadmap of how it would ultimately meet its 'net zero' emission goal of 2070, and said the country's focus will be on the "rational utilisation of national resources with due regard on energy security" CLIMAT and its transition from fossil fuels would be undertaken in a "just, smooth, sustainable and all inclusive manner".
India has become the 57th country to make this submission which is a requirement for all countries under the Paris Agreement. Other countries who have submitted their strategy include the USA, China, EU, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, UK, South Africa and Russia among others.
Under the LT-LEDS, the countries are expected to broadly outline&nbsp;their plan and vision explaining how they would meet their respective climate action targets - called nationally determined contribution (NDC) - as well as net neutrality goals.
"India's emphasis is not on words. Mere numbers are not the goal, and India will surprise the world, not with promises but with actions that are undertaken," said the country's environment minister Bhupender Yadav while releasing the strategy during the ongoing climate talks (COP27). He noted that the country's need to eradicate development deficits and ensure food and energy security would guide it to its low-carbon growth path.
Speaking on broad points of the country's strategy, he said, "We have provided a long term vision of our transition in all sectors of the economy including electricity, transport, industry, urban, forestry and carbon removal technologies. Our document also makes it clear that this effort to transform India's economy would require huge financial resources."
