The anti-encroachment drives of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi earlier this year took centre stage in the politics of the city and was discussed across the country. According to civic officials, MCD has freed 2,762km of government land from encroachments between January and October. While MCD claims that anti-encroachment drives are routine, some exercises this year took on a political colour, as in Jahangirpuri, which was wracked by communal tension in April.
This led many, including Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, to write to the mayors to identify similarly encroached areas and clear them of illegal occupation. Mukesh Suryaan, mayor of the erstwhile south corporation, said that localities like Shaheen Bagh would see anti-encroachment drives, though these were not carried out.
