How can the calcium buildup affect the arteries, and are there any specific causes?
Excess calcium in the blood with cholesterol produces plaque, which obstructs the flow of blood in the artery, causing the artery walls to stiffen leading to heart attacks and strokes. Specific causes that might lead to calcified lesions in patients are diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol levels, hypertension, smoking, heavy drinking, or any kidney disease.
