Ahmedabad: Adbhut (marvellous) and abhootpurva (unprecedented) were the words Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to describe the 36th National Games at the stadium named after him in Motera on Thursday.
While calling the event a launchpad for many future Olympic medallists, Modi, former chief minister of the host state, called the Games open in front of a crowd of 150,000 people.
The ceremony also saw Olympic medallists javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, shuttler PV Sindhu, shooter Gagan Narang, wrestler Ravi Dahiya-and former long-jumper Anju Bobby George at the stage along with Indian Olympic Association's secretary Rajeev Mehta, union sports minister Anurag Thakur and Gujarat's chief minister Bhupendra Patel.
While calling the Tokyo Games performance India's best show at the Olympics, Modi said Indian athletes have been winning more medals since the past eight years.
