Earlier this week, a fish seller in Kerala got a bank notice warning him that his house would be attached if he did not pay back his Rs 9 lakh loan. But the despair was short lived as a few hours later, he found out that lady luck had smiled on him, and he’d won Rs 70 lakh in the Akshaya lottery run by the state government.
Rags-to-jackpot stories like these have whetted the appetite of Keralites for lottery tickets. What began as an experiment on September 1, 1967, when people could try winning a jackpot of Rs 50,000 with a one-rupee ticket, has grown into a considerable source of revenue for Kerala, one of 13 Indian states where lotteries are legal. This year tickets for the Onam bumper cost as much as Rs 500 while prize money went up to Rs 25 crore, with the state notching up sales of Rs 270 crore.
