Metro regains close to 75% of its pre-pandemic footfall

After witnessing a major dip in the footfall after the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 and during the subsequent waves, the Metro ridership has been on a slow-but-steady rise in 2022, and according to the data shared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), August saw 44.9 lakh 44,89,723-"average line utilisation" per day. Unlike counting a passenger's single journey as one, line utilisation takes into account every corridor used by the passenger to complete a journey.

The Delhi Metro network used to witness an average line utilisation of 60 lakh per day before Covid-19 and the August figure is 74.8% of it. With almost all Covid-19 restrictions being removed from early this year, the resultant rise in mobility is reflected in Delhi Metro's ridership figures. In February, the average line utilisation was 35 lakh, which increased to 39.5 lakh by May.

According to the DMRC data, more than 55% of the ridership is accounted for by two of its busiest corridors- the Yellow (Samaypur Badli-HUDA City Centre) and Blue (Dwarka-Vaishali/Noida Electronic City) lines.

Yellow Line recorded an average line utilisation of 12.3 lakh 12,33,133 in July, which increased to 12.5 lakh12,54,563 per day in August.
