Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan. 11:22pm. 8 October 2023
In October 2023, I ran my first photography tour of Jordan with my good friend Bashar. Then on 7th October 2023, the attacks in Gaza changed the world. But this was unknown to our group initially, as we were hiding out deep in the deserts of Wadi Rum, without phone signals. The building news was harrowing and it left me concerned about how I was ever going to get us out of the Middle East.
The day after I safely jetted home, I reflected on a tense ending to a very memorable photographic trip. Working in the camp with us at Wadi Rum Desert Camp was an unassuming 27-year-old American, with the unlikely name of Malibu Taetz. It wasn't clear what his role was, but he was gentle, unassuming and observant.
“So your parents are hippies,” I sniggered, only to find out that his parents were not hippies, which made me feel rather rude. Apparently he was named after a Chevy Malibu car!
Malibu was a softly spoken intellectual, taking a sabbatical in the desert after finishing a large film project.
