So far, only slow zooms were available and hence Nikon DX users were asking for a fast prime even though a few of the compact full-frame lenses were well suited to be used on the small DX bodies. Now, that need has been answered. So, how does it perform? Read on to get an exhaustive report on its performance.
Design and Build Quality
The 24 mm DX Nikkor is a very small and light lens that uses a polycarbonate lens mount. This lens follows the design idiom of the other two Nikon compacts – the 28 mm and 40 mm lenses, with a very small front element and a larger rear element. It follows a telecentric design that exploits the large lens mount diameter. There are no switches on the lens but the multifunction ring is large and easy to use. There is a rubber gasket around the lens mount. Nikon also says that this lens is dust and drip resistant, with the usual caveats. An unusual design feature is the conical lens hood with both the lens and the hood having the same 46 mm thread. So, the lens cap fits the lens as well as the hood. Nikon also says that if you are using filters along with the hood, they should be fitted to the lens hood and not to the lens directly.
