A little before dawn Gadai went out into the courtyard. The autumn moon shone bright in the starry sky. The scent of ripened harvest, freshly cut and stacked up, heralded the ten-day festival of Durga puja. Gadai felt a thrill of joy. From the day the goddess would begin her journey to earth until she returned, it would be a grand celebration of devotion.
Kshudhiram came outside, dressed and ready for a journey. As in the past, his nephew, Ramchandra, had sent an invitation for the puja at his home in Selampur and although he had not been feeling well, Kshudhiram had decided to go with his elder son Ramkumar. "I'm 68 years old," he had told his wife, "and not in the best of health. God alone knows if I'll be able to go next year."
