Midjourney, known primarily for its AI image generation capabilities, has announced an ambitious expansion into medical hardware with the development of a full-body ultrasonic scanner.

The project, under the new Midjourney Medical division, aims to create detailed 3D body maps in approximately 60 seconds using advanced ultrasound technology. This surprising pivot represents a significant departure from the company's core focus on visual AI while leveraging its expertise in processing complex data.

The scanner uses a water immersion design where users descend on a platform through a ring of ultrasonic sensors. These sensors emit sound waves from multiple angles, capturing reflections to construct high-resolution internal images without radiation or magnetic fields. Early descriptions suggest the resulting scans could rival traditional MRI quality but at a fraction of the time and cost, potentially making advanced imaging more accessible for preventive health monitoring.

This development comes through a partnership with Butterfly Network, utilizing their ultrasound-on-chip technology. Midjourney plans to deploy the scanners in dedicated spa-like facilities, starting with a flagship location in San Francisco, aiming for broader availability in coming years.
