This restaurant, which dates back to 1465, serves noodles made in house from high-quality buckwheat. For its signature dish, horai soba, noodles are served cold with eight brightly coloured toppings: wasabi, shiitake mushrooms, strips of omlette, Japanese spring onion, grated radish, nori, prawn tempura and sesame seeds. ¥2,805 (£17.50) honke-owariya.co.jp/en

FALOODEH
Sofreh, New York City
A classic Iranian dessert, faloodeh combines threads of thin, crunchy rice noodles with a semi-frozen sugar and rosewater syrup. It's often served with a wedge of fresh lime, a scoop of saffron or pistachio ice cream and tart sour cherries. At Sofreh, in Brooklyn, it comes with sweet lime juice and a rosewater sorbet. $8 (£6.50) sofrehnyc.com
