A 26-year-old marketing professional from Bangalore, Sarthak A.S., saw an ad on social media about a campaign called Election on Wheels, promising a 10-day immersive tour across six states that contribute to over one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha. Originally from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which he described as "less political" than other parts of the country, Sarthak was eager to understand the grassroots of Indian politics beyond the "9 PM TV news." He applied for this election tourism opportunity organised by the online educational institute, School of Politics. The programme, costing INR 85,000, was open to anyone, but only 40 people were selected based on their profiles. Abhimanyu Bharti, founder of the School of Politics, shared that they received over 200 applications. Applicants included startup founders, government officials, local elected representatives, businessmen, political scholars, social media influencers, media personnel, and students aged 18 to 66 years. They targeted participants through their online institution and social media ads. Bharti emphasised that the programme aimed to educate people on the intricate details of the election process in India. The journey covered key battlegrounds where elections are decided. Starting on April 13 from Delhi, the tour included cities like Agra, Lucknow, Amethi, Varanasi, Gaya, Ranchi, and Kolkata, covering 2,500 kilometers by road. The itinerary included visits to BJP and Congress war rooms, media house election rooms, significant political locations like Amethi and Saifai, and events such as a day with candidates, the silence period, tea with journalists, nomination rallies, dinner with leaders, and a rally with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.In Amethi, the group visited villages to understand why it has been the Nehru-Gandhi family's stronghold, how Smriti Irani challenged it, and what the current election looked like. Saifai, the native village of prominent leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, was included to understand his developmental impact on the village.The programme brochure described it as "a unique opportunity" to learn about the Indian electoral system and interact with stakeholders such as political leaders, strategists, media personnel, psephologists, party cadres, vendors, and voters. "He believed the government should care about certain issues and wanted to take matters into his own hands. It was super inspiring." Her keen interest in politics led her to enroll. She appreciated the time spent with a returning officer, who clarified the EVM counting process and other election details. He found the tour aligned perfectly with his interests and shared that it broadened his perspective on ground-level politics.Surabhi Surve, 27, from Thane, Maharashtra, valued the direct interactions with voters and the insights gained from surveys for the 2024 general elections. She suggested that future programmes consider language diversity to accommodate participants from different regions. While some found the programme fee high, others felt it was justified given the insights and experiences.Rising Political Interest Data from the Election Commission of India show over 2.63 crore new electors included in the electoral roll, with female electors surpassing newly enrolled male voters by over 15 per cent.
