Hypothyroidism is an important underdiagnosed condition
Larry Kraitzick
Hypothyroidism In Dogs

An underactive thyroid is one of the most common endocrine diseases to affect dogs. It usually affects large breed middle-aged dogs. Some of the breeds at increased risk of developing the condition include the Golden Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Irish Setter, Miniature Schnauzer, Dachshund, Cocker Spaniel, Beagle and Airedale Terrier. I’ve also often seen this condition in Ridgebacks and labradors.

In the majority of cases, it’s caused by immune mediated destruction of the thyroid gland. This gland produces thyroid hormones that affect many body systems.
