Pneumonia in dogs
Canine Zone|August/September 2020
Pneumonia is the inflammation of the lung tissue and airways, and this condition has many different causes.
Dr Larry Kraitzick
Pneumonia in dogs

The most common cause of pneumonia is viral infection. Canine Distemper Virus, Adenovirus Types 1 and 2, Canine Influenza virus, and Parainfluenza virus cause damage to the airways, leading to inflammation. These conditions are often complicated by a secondary bacterial infection.

Parasitic invasion of the bronchi can also result in pneumonia, and irritation of the lining of airways by breathing irritating substances such as smoke from a fire may also lead to pneumonia. Aspiration pneumonia (food in airways) may result from persistent vomiting, abnormal movement of the oesophagus, or improperly administered medications (for example, oil or barium) or food (forced feeding). Bacterial pneumonia may be primaries, such as in Tuberculosis and Bordetella Bronchiseptica, but are usually secondary or found in combination to other conditions, for example, Kennel Cough. Fungal pneumonia is a rare cause but is extremely serious.
