REFUGE AT THE REAR
YANG YUJIE, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE
In line with Yang Yujie’s aspirations to explore sustainable and affordable housing to impact the lives of those in need, he envisioned a communal building constructed with a social agenda to provide refuge and work opportunities for the rag-and-bone community.
Located near a back alley in Little India, the structure houses a community market for them to sell their second-hand wares, a café, residence as well as sheltered spots for them to live, work and interact too.
Yang’s open design also allows the building to serve as a platform to foster encounters with this lesser-known community and passers-by.
He shares, “Prior to my tertiary education, I have exposed myself to the art of sculpture making and created my first installation dwelling on the notion of creating familiarity and feeling at home in an unfamiliar space.
“This subsequently influenced my goal to experiment and create interesting spaces that hope to engage people’s senses, evoke emotions and feel comfort within.”
