Utility Of Glass In Construction
Architecture + Design
|September 2016
Over the course of several years, the glass making process has continued to develop and now, just like everything else in the world; it is being upgraded using innovative technology.
Let us now explore various ways in which glass can be utilised – both for homes and commercial establishments. Glass used for external façade: In construction, glass is more commonly used as an external façade in a curtain wall system, which is basically a non-structural outer layer that covers a building in order to resist the elements of weather from seeping inside. Although there are other materials like metal panels and fabric veneer which can be used for this system, builders mostly prefer glass as it can be modified as per their requirements, be it in thickness or opacity. The two most commonly used glass thickness types used in this system for commercial buildings are - 1/4 inch (6mm) monolithic and 1 inch (25mm) insulating glass.
Commercial Glazing: Glazing is the process of installing/ fitting a part of wall or window with glass. Officially done by glaziers, this practice involves cutting, installing, or removing glass as required. In architectural design, the most common glazing types include – clear and tinted float glass, tempered glass, patterned glass, wired glass and laminated glass.

#BEATTHEFIRE - WHAT YOU SPECIFY CAN DECIDE WHO SURVIVES
In moments of fire, there is no second chance. The materials you choose today determine whether a building protects lives tomorrow - or puts them at risk. In an age where speed of construction and visual appeal often overshadow safety, one critical truth must remain nonnegotiable: fire safety begins at the specification stage.
