The engine is considered to be the heart of a vehicle – the source of power.
However, the term powertrain, which refers to the entire system of the vehicle that powers the vehicle, also includes components that enable it to move forward and back. This movement of the vehicle is enabled by the transmission, which carries the power generated from the engine and transfers it to the wheels. This power could be transferred to the rear, front or all moving wheels of a vehicle.
The scenario is pretty straightforward when only certain wheels need to have the power transferred. However, there are vehicles that offer the driver the ability to transfer the power to select wheels for improved traction or purposeful driving. The component that enables transfer of power to the desired wheels is the torque transfer system. This system, also called transfer case, finds use in applications for passenger vehicles as well as commercial vehicles.
Divgi Torque Transfer Systems (DivgiTTS) is a manufacturer of such technologies, with a long history in transmission systems. We visited the company’s manufacturing facility as well as the corporate office in Bhosari, Pune, to understand the usage of torque transfer systems as well as gain insights into the future of transmissions. Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
