A FUTURE CHARACTERISED BY A POWERTRAIN MIX
When Karl Benz invented the Benz Patent Motorcar in 1885 – widely regarded as the world’s first production automobile – it was hard to see how this invention would effectively change the entire world. For today’s individual mobility, the car is the essential component. The future will be characterised by a powertrain mix and expanded mobility services to make traffic more efficient and sustainable, while ensuring individual mobility.
The world population will increase to more than 9.5 bn people by 2050, with two-thirds of them living in cities, 1, according to projections by the United Nations [1]. As a result, growing urbanisation would result in high demands of individual mobility, not just for people, but also goods. Relative to the baseline year of 2010, the number of passenger km in motorised individual traffic is expected to increase by 12.9 % by 2030, while tonnage km in freight traffic are expected to increase by 16.8 % [2]. According to a study by Shell, the number of cars worldwide will increase to around 2 bn vehicles by 2050 [3]. Mobility is and remains a growth market; especially in emerging economies.
In addition to congested transport infrastructure, local air pollution is a severe issue in megacities, although emissions from internal combustion engines account for only a share of the emissions. Noise pollution is another challenge caused by traffic. For these reasons, electrified powertrains will increase in urban centres, especially as the recuperation capability offers decisive consumption advantages.

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
