In order to decrease CO2 emission and fuel consumption in the USA for the Cafe programme, especially the weight of US American light-duty pickup trucks has to be reduced. Using an extensive study, ArcelorMittal shows with high-strength and press-hardened steels and current production processes how a total mass reduction of 174 kg (-23 %) has been achieved on the initial 748 kg of the body and the frame scope of the baseline Chevrolet Silverado – at almost neutral cost.
AMBITIOUS TARGETS TILL 2025
In the United States of America the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (Cafe) regulation is evolving toward more stringent requirement level for 2017 and later 2025 in all vehicle segments. Meeting these higher mileage targets will require improving powertrain, drivetrain and aerodynamics but will also require significant mass reduction across all vehicle segments. Due to their size and high production volumes, light-duty pickup trucks are a particular lightweight design focus for most OEMs and suppliers.
An extensive study has been performed by the steel maker ArcelorMittal to demonstrate the potential of advanced high-strength steel grades on the body and the frame scope of the gross weight of a light-duty pickup truck. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how intensive use of advanced high-strength steel already in use in the automotive industry can provides high weight reduction for pickup truck structures. This was focussed on advanced steel grades currently available to automotive customers in North America.
However a subsequent investigation also included steel grades currently under development. The goal was to meet or exceed all current stiffness and crash worthiness performance requirements for the full-size pickup vehicle, while achieving a vehicle mass compatible with upcoming 2025 Cafe targets. A complete set of generic performance requirements was built at the beginning of the investigation, to address crash safety and stiffness requirements for the full vehicle or module constraints to satisfy to in use properties and durability. An exhaustive cost analysis was also performed to ensure that the mass savings were achieved at little or no cost penalty.

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
